Astrology 101 · 4: Houses and aspects

A birth chart looks like a clock face; its twelve slices are called houses. Each house stands for an area of life and they are counted from the rising sign, which is why houses need a birth time.

The twelve houses in brief

  • 1 self and appearance · 2 money and values · 3 communication, siblings
  • 4 home, family, roots · 5 love, creativity, children · 6 daily work, health
  • 7 marriage and partnerships · 8 shared resources, transformation · 9 travel, belief, study
  • 10 career and public life · 11 friends, goals · 12 inner world, solitude

Aspects

When the distance between two planets is close to certain angles, an aspect forms:

  • Conjunction (0°): energies merge and intensify.
  • Trine (120°) and sextile (60°): harmonious, easy-flowing energy.
  • Square (90°) and opposition (180°): tension; energy that takes effort but helps you grow.
Gold lines in the middle of your chart are harmonious aspects, pink lines tense ones.
