Astrology 101 · 1: Sun, Moon and rising — your big three

When someone asks "what's your sign?", we usually give our Sun sign: the sign the Sun was in on the day we were born. But a birth chart has three key points that complete each other.

Sun sign: who you are

The Sun describes your identity, vitality and the area where you want to shine. If you know your birthday you know your Sun sign; only people born on cusp days (around the 19th–23rd of each month) need their birth time.

Moon sign: how you feel

The Moon shows your emotions, your inner world and what you need to feel safe. As the Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, it can sometimes only be given approximately without a birth time.

Rising sign: how others see you

The rising sign (ascendant) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It describes first impressions, manner and your approach to life. It changes roughly every two hours, so it cannot be calculated without your birth time and place.

In short: the Sun answers "who am I", the Moon "what do I feel", the rising sign "how do I come across".
